Cancer
Here on Cape Cod, and here on YouTube, I'm known as the guy that cleans exterior surfaces (and especially cedar). With way over 2000 local customers under my belt since 2010, it's a regular occurrence to run into somebody at the grocery store or the gas station that I did a job for years ago. It's a regular occurrence to get referrals from those folks, or to get calls from them because they've moved to a different place and have more work for me. I get handshakes; I get pats on the shoulder; sometimes I get hugs.
...because I'm known as the guy that works hard and does a good job making peoples' homes look their best. Mine is a very one-dimensional public existence. For years, I've kept it that way on purpose. The world "out there" doesn't need to know more than the fact that I work hard and I'm a savant at cleaning cedar. Done.
After all this time, I'm now finding it necessary to share a little bit more about myself. As in: "I work hard, I'm good at cleaning cedar, and my wife is battling cancer."
They're tough words to write and tougher to say in person. And, unbelievably, this comes on the heals of a year in which she had an artery in her head blow out. She's luck to be alive, and now she's fighting cancer.
Why am I sharing this here? Why am I robotically divulging this to customers and prospects alike who call looking to get their cedar roofs and decks and siding cleaned?
I'm sharing this because what's happening on the Homefront is, obviously, affecting all other aspects of my life.. including my cleaning career. Whereas in past years I'd jump right on those last-minute work requests, this year "No means No." When the available time to work in a day or a week is full, that's it. I'm taking Leah to tests and specialists on a weekly basis; if that's the only calm, dry day that week (which WOULD have been perfect for cleaning a roof), then so be it. While my income obviously continues to be hugely important to me and my family, maximizing it isn't currently priority #1. We are in survival mode.
If you've been through cancer, you know what I'm saying. For those who can wait for a job well done, I'll be happy to give your job the attention it deserves as soon as I'm able. Currently, that means "sometime this autumn." For those who can't wait, I totally understand. I can offer suggestions of who else to call.
